Seen here are a Sopwith Camel (replica), Supermarine Spitfire XIV and Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, three of the types flown by the squadron during the past 100 years. Formed at Gosport on 1 February 1915, 17(R) Test & Evaluation Squadron is today part of the multi-national Joint Operational Test Team at the California base. The unit, which comprises of both RAF and Fleet Air Arm personnel, is the first of the eight international partners in the F-35 programme to begin operational testing. The UK’s first F-35 Lightning II squadron has marked the centenary of its formation with a parade at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Formed in February 1915, 17(R) Squadron has served with distinction throughout its existence including the Battle of Britain. Today it is the test and evaluation squadron for the RAF and Fleet Air Arm's newest fighter, the fifth generation F-35B Lightning II.）
