The Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944 was the largest amphibious assault ever launched. More than 75,000 British, Canadian and other Commonwealth troops landed on the beaches alongside the United States and the Free French, in an Allied invasion force of more than 130,000. Another 7,900 British troops were landed by air. Supporting the invasion were more than 7,000 ships and smaller vessels off the coast (including the famous HMS Belfast) and 11,000 aircraft. In total, British and Commonwealth casualties (killed, wounded or missing) on D-Day numbered approximately 4,300. The invasion established a crucial second front in the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation, ultimately leading to victory for Allied Forces in 1945.）

The jet (tail number ZK308) has been adorned with iconic black and white invasion markings in a tribute to the significant role of the Hawker Typhoon in WWII – particularly during D-Day operations. Included in the unveiling ceremony was a flypast by the Tyhpoon along with a spitfire.）

The stripes were intended as an aid to identification for friendly ground, naval, and other air assets.The aircraft represents TP-V of 198 Sqn, MN526. MN526 is a Typhoon that represents all of the WW2 RAF Typhoons, and all of their pilots, particularly the D-Day operations. 198 Sqn was a distinguished operator of the type, being equipped in Dec 1942 at Digby, Lincolnshire and serving until Sep 1945. As a nod to the current world-class multi-role aircraft, 198 undertook a variety of roles with the aircraft, as a night-fighter, as a defensive fighter during enemy raids on the South coast and as a ground-attack aircraft during the campaign in North-West Europe. None of the current Typhoon squadrons were equipped with Typhoon over the D-Day period, although both 1(F) and 3(F) were previous Typhoon operators.The aircraft is being used as a back-up, and sometimes the primary, display aircraft for the 2014 Typhoon Display season, flown by Flt Lt Noel Rees of 29(R) Squadron. For air shows that have a particular D-Day theme this jet will be used, starting with Duxford on 24 May.）

While the modern crew took their clear imagery from 20,000 feet, the Mustang pilots had to fly at 800 feet, within ramge of anti-aircraft fire from the coast.）

Veterans and serving personnel paid tribute to the events which liberated France from the German occupation, with the all three Armed Forces standing on parade for Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal who took the salute from the dias. More than 140 Royal and Dutch Marines also stormed the Southsea beach as part of an amphibious demonstration from HMS Bulwark and Dutch ship Johan de Witt.）

With the Amphibious group from the Royal Marines conducting a dynamic display on Southsea beach front, the ship sailed into Portsmouth with sailors lining the deck in unison with the Dutch assault ship Johan de Witt. HMS Bulwark then lead the procession out with a 15 gun salute and a 'cheer ship'.）
