The stripes were intended as an aid to identification for friendly ground, naval, and other air assets.The aircraft represents TP-V of 198 Sqn, MN526. MN526 is a Typhoon that represents all of the WW2 RAF Typhoons, and all of their pilots, particularly the D-Day operations. 198 Sqn was a distinguished operator of the type, being equipped in Dec 1942 at Digby, Lincolnshire and serving until Sep 1945. As a nod to the current world-class multi-role aircraft, 198 undertook a variety of roles with the aircraft, as a night-fighter, as a defensive fighter during enemy raids on the South coast and as a ground-attack aircraft during the campaign in North-West Europe. None of the current Typhoon squadrons were equipped with Typhoon over the D-Day period, although both 1(F) and 3(F) were previous Typhoon operators.The aircraft is being used as a back-up, and sometimes the primary, display aircraft for the 2014 Typhoon Display season, flown by Flt Lt Noel Rees of 29(R) Squadron. For air shows that have a particular D-Day theme this jet will be used, starting with Duxford on 24 May.）
