Merlin Mk1 – the world’s most potent submarine hunting helicopter. The Merlin Mk1 have been in service with the Fleet Air Arm since the late 1990s and, after thorough testing and evaluation, the helicopters have been on the front line since 2000. Our job is to find – and if necessary destroy – enemy submarines using our state-of-the-art sonar buoys which we drop into the ocean and Sting Ray torpedoes. Beyond searching for submarines, we carry out traditional maritime helicopter duties: anti-piracy/drug-running patrols, surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue, and passenger and load transfers. There are more than 40 Merlins in service with the Fleet Air Arm in training and front-line squadrons. Most of these are in the middle of a £750m upgrade to turn the Merlin Mk1 into the Merlin Mk2 which has more powerful computer systems and is easier for aircrew to operate. This photograph was one of a stunning portfolio that won the Royal Navy's Photographer of the Year Award 2008 for POA(Phot) Sean Clee. It was the second consecutive year that he had won the prestigious title.）

A Royal Marine rigid inflatable boat dangles from a Chinook helicopter during a hazardous 'Underslinging', a method of quick extraction and insertion of waterborne personnel. The daring procedure involves the helicopter lowering strops and coming down to just above sea level at which point the boat and crew will push through the down draft under the helicopter and attach the lines to the boat. The helicopter will then lift the boat with crew still in it clear of the water once clear and the boat is airborne, the crew will be individually winched up into the helicopter. On returning the boats crew fast-rope down into the boat ready once set the helicopter will deploy the boat and crew back into water.）

The Sea King Mk4 – known throughout the Naval world as the Junglie – are the green giants of the Fleet Air Arm. Wherever Royal Marines go in the world, they are accompanied by the venerable Sea Kings of the Commando Helicopter Force, based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. It not merely ferries the green berets into action, but also delivers their supplies and also field guns or Land Rovers if needed. The Junglies have seen action most recently in Iraq – they were instrumental in the opening hours of the 2003 war with Saddam Hussein by landing Royal Marines on the Al Faw peninsula. Recent years have seen the two front-line Mk4 squadrons – 845 and 846 Naval Air Squadrons – committed around the clock in Afghanistan supporting the mission of all Allied forces there. The Sea King was upgraded for its mission in Helmand to the Mk4+. It featured improved rotor blades to cope with the challenging environment, defensive aids and decoys to fend off enemy attack, night vision goggles to allow the crew to fly at all times and in all weather conditions. The Mk4 owes its nickname not to its distinctive jungle-green livery but the historical role Commando helicopter squadrons performed in Borneo in the 1960s.）
