The Squadron are based at RAF Leuchars and operate Typhoon FGR4 aircraft. They were formed in 1914 at Farnborough from the Royal Flying Corp and originally operated as artillery spotters over the battle fields of Northern France. The Squadron has a rich operational history, serving continually overseas from 1919 to 1969 across the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. During the North Africa Campaign they operated Hurricane IID aircraft in an interdiction role destroying German tanks; a role from which they became known as the ‘Flying Canopeners’. Formal Squadron celebrations will take place in early April once the Squadron returns from the Exercise.
